The Donkey Society Of Queensland Inc. has always stressed the importance of training donkeys so that owners may fully enjoy their enchanting pets and also realize the potential of these useful animals. To this end the Society has introduced a Performance Grading Program. The Program provides a useful guide to the level of training a donkey has received and gives recognition to those members who have achieved each standard through the provision of grading certificates. Grading standards run from a basic “Companion Donkey” through to “ Ridden & Driven Donkey”. The Requirements for each level are: Grade 1 Companion Donkey > Catching > Fitting and attaching a halter > Tying up > Leading at the walk > Grooming > Rasping the feet Grade 2 Useful Donkey > Halt and go back > Tying up away from other donkeys > Leading at the trot > Walking over a variety of surfaces > Accepting a simple pack saddle > Long reining > Driving - snig a serpentine course and/or > Riding – ride around a figure of eight course Grade 3 is divided into 2 parts, Grade 3 Driving and Grade 3 Riding. Donkeys can do either or both. Grade 3 Working Donkey Driving > walk into the centre of the area > Stand quietly for dismount and remount / remove pack and reload > Trot a figure of eight > Trot a large circle > Halt, stand and back 4 steps > Trot a large circle in the opposite direction from the circle driven before Riding > Walk into the centre of the area > Stand quietly for dismount and remount > Trot a serpentine > Trot a figure of eight > Canter a large circle > Negotiate a small jump Certificate of Excellence Awarded to a Donkey who has accquired all gradings below: Grade Level 1 Grade Level 2 Grade Level 3 in both Driving and Riding
